Old Stone Church Archaeological Excavation

Richard Veit, assisted by Brock Giordano

The ruins of the Old Stone Church in Washington Township are among the most picturesque in all of New Jersey.

As part of an ongoing effort to stabilize these ruins archaeologist Richard Veit, assisted by Brock Giordano, carried out a program of limited archaeological excavation. This fieldwork, conducted in the summer of 2009, provided new information about the construction of the historic church and a surprising glimpse of 20th century Long Valley’s historic dump.

The Washington Township Historical Society will present a program by Dr. Veit on Monday, March 8 at the meeting room, Washington Township Public Library, 37 East Springtown Road, from 7 to 9 PM, so come and hear more about these archaeological discoveries in our own backyard.

The program and archaeological excavation has been paid for by a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission. This free lecture is open to all members of the public.

The Historical Society operates the Township Museum in the old Union Schoolhouse, 6 Fairview Avenue, next to the church ruins. Open Sundays, 2 to 4 pm. Inquiries: 908-876-9696.
