The Long Valley Mill

The building looms over the bustling Route 24, once called Chester Pike, just east of Long Valley center. At once, upon seeing it, you know that the mill holds a thousand stories and probably a thousand more secrets in its ancient timbers.

Mailbox Damage Policy

Mailbox Damage by Snowplow Policy

All damaged mailboxes (on Township roads)  shall be inspected by the Department of Public Works personnel in order to determine whether the mailbox was directly hit by a Washington Township Plow or other snow removal equipment and if in fact the mailbox was properly installed.

If the property was damaged by the weight of the snow alone the Township will not be liable for a replacement. If the property was damaged by a direct hit by Township equipment the post and or mail box, depending on the type of damage, will be supplied but not installed by the Township. The Township will purchase and have on hand a supply of standard regulation mailboxes and posts for your convenience. Anything above and beyond is the sole responsibility of the resident.  Please see below for USPS guidelines for installing mailboxes, proper height, and distance from the road.

To view the Towship Mailbox Resolution click here.

If you believe your mailbox was damaged by Township equipment, contact the Department of Public Works at 908-876-3382.

If your mailbox is on a road maintained by Morris County (Bartley, Schooley's Mountain, East Mill, West Milll, Fairmount) please call Morris County Road Supervisor at 973-285-6763

USPS Mailbox Guidelines

Installing a New Mailbox

Look for Postmaster General's Seal

Every new mailbox design should be reviewed and receive the Postmaster General’s (PMG) seal of approval before it goes to market. If you opt to construct your own mailbox, it must meet the same standards as manufactured boxes, so show the plans to your local postmaster for approval.

Placing the Mailbox

  • Position your mailbox 41" to 45" above ground level.
  • Place your mailbox 6" to 8" back from the curb. If you do not have a raised curb, contact your local postmaster for guidance.
  • Put your house or apartment number on the mailbox.
  • If your mailbox is on a different street from your house or apartment, put your full street address on the box.
  • If you are attaching the box to your house, make sure the postal carrier can reach it easily from your sidewalk, steps, or porch.

Installing the Post

  • A 4" x 4" wooden support or a 2"-diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe.
  • Avoid unyielding and potentially dangerous supports, like heavy metal pipes, concrete posts, and farm equipment (e.g., milk cans filled with concrete).
  • Bury your post no more than 24" deep.
