FREE Tree Seedlings for Washington Township Residents
Free Tree Seedlings for Washington Township Residents
Free tree seedlings will be available to Washington Township residents April 23rd as part of the New Jersey Forest Service’s New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign.
From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 23, 2022, residents will be able to pick up up to 5 tree seedlings at Rock Spring Park at the gazebo nearest to the Senior Center. Seedlings are available on a first come, first served basis. Residents should plant the seedlings within two days after pick-up in order to prevent the roots from drying out.
With natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, and the damage caused by several new invasive insects to New Jersey, our state needs more new tree seedlings than ever before. Therefore, this campaign, a joint effort between Washington Township, New Jersey Forest Service, New Jersey Soil Conservation Districts, Arbor Day Foundation, iCIMS, FedEx, State Farm and International Paper, is moving into its 8th year.
When properly planted and maintained, trees can be assets to a community. They improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood or business district, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants, and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.
❓How big are the trees?
Six inches to two foot tall bare root seedlings in a bundle of five.
❓What kind of tree species will I receive?
There is no published list of species per location. Species are distributed based on what grows best in that area. Municipalities in the northern part of the state may receive persimmon or red oak trees, while towns in the south may receive Virginia pine or other species adapted to this region. Seedlings that are salt tolerant are distributed to shore towns may include bayberry or beach plum, shrubs commonly found on dunes and in other coastal environments.
